Overview:

John H. Patterson founded the National Cash Register Company, maker of the first mechanical cash registers. Later, Charles F. Kettering designed the first cash register powered by an electric motor. From that point forward until the advent of today's automated Point Of Sale (POS) system, the cash register reigned as the device of choice for collecting money and processing sales in every business where goods and services were sold directly to customers. It rang up sales, calculated change, accepted the customer's money into its cash drawer, and issued a sales receipt. It also provided a minor degree of security for store owners with a locked drawer that rang a bell as it opened during every sale and could only be manually opened with a special key.
