Overview:

WiMAX/802.16 is a standard of Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMAN). This standard, which was originally designed for solving the last mile problem, has become popular in fixed and mobile wireless networks. WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) wireless networks face more security risks than wired networks. Even though IEEE 802.16 defines a security sub layer to provide privacy by encrypting connections between Base Station (BS) and Subscriber Station (SS), there are still several security problems to be settled. This report gives an overview of the security of WiMAX/802.16 focusing on the Media Access Control (MAC) layer in mesh mode, illustrates possible attacks to mesh mode network, and proposes solutions to prevent these attacks.
