Overview:

For the last several decades, most businesses have used Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) private lines to support point-to-point, dedicated inter-office voice and data connectivity. In the mid-1990s, the shared or virtual and lower-cost nature of Frame Relay altered this model. Over time, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-based Carrier Ethernet E-Line and Ethernet Local Area Network (E-LAN) services promise to eliminate TDM private lines and Frame Relay Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) altogether. Until then, traditional TDM private lines still represent a huge market for service providers worldwide.
