Overview:

This paper overviews the recent progress and standardization of terrestrial wireless and satellite communication systems. The terrestrial wireless systems are now standardized by ITU-R SG5 in the area of IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced, land mobile systems, aeronautical mobile systems and fixed wireless access systems. This paper focuses on the free-space optical communication systems which can transmit a very high-speed data and describes their characteristics which are discussed within not only ITU-R WP5C but also international conferences. The inter-orbit optical communication systems which utilize the advantages of optical transmission features as a high capacity transmission link are also introduced. Finally, the new architectures for both fixed and mobile satellite communication systems are discussed within ITU-R WP4B.
