Overview:

Due to the growing commercial importance of the Internet, resilience is becoming a key design issue for future IP-based networks. Reconfiguration times on the order of a few hundred milliseconds are required in the case of network element failures - far away from the slow rerouting of current implementations. Besides the usage of MPLS below IP, several multi-path extensions and timer modifications have been recently proposed for speeding up IP rerouting. In this paper these approaches are first described in a common context and then compared by simulations using very detailed simulation models. It turns out that an accelerated update of the internal forwarding tables in the nodes together with fast hardware-based failure detection are the most promising measures for reaching the required reconfiguration time frames.
