Overview:

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) brings together business processes and functionalities as groups of distributed, loosely coupled services. Each service is modular, independent, and self-sufficient, containing no calls to other services or applications, and it accomplishes a specific task. Protocols are written to describe how different services communicate, and many diverse protocols may call an individual service to perform its functionality. Services pass data to each other according to these protocols. Each service has a standardized; self-describing interface of metadata that enables protocols to call them and enables them to be found in the enterprise repository of services. SOA allows applications to be constructed by using existing, standardized building blocks and interlinking them with new protocols, rather than creating new applications wholesale.
