Overview:

Media servers have always been associated with clearly defined business models and they are still supporting critical applications for service providers. Although media servers are increasingly presenting richer features, application developers face the challenge of drilling down to the proprietary protocols and libraries. There is therefore the need for an abstraction layer that is generic and not specific to a particular Media Server. This generic API would be agnostic to underlying protocols and therefore free application developers from the need to master Media server specific APIs. This is the objective of the JSR309. This paper provides application developers an overview and the benefits of the JSR309 API and several samples to illustrate this API and its simplicity of use.
