Overview:

Fedora's popularity amongst institutions is largely due to its scalability as well as its flexibility in handling heterogeneous data. It is also unique when compared with most other repositories in decoupling the GUI from the core repository backend. This has allowed Fedora to be used in many institutional environments, each with their own GUI interface that is customized to their particular needs. However in recent years, repositories are being required by end-users to open up restricted access across institutional boundaries. A common example is researchers from different institutions working on a joint project, but requiring access to restricted data that is stored at a particular institution's repository. This requirement is often referred to as supports for federated identity.
