Overview:
This paper tackles some of the more esoteric issues often encountered when using IBM DB2 for i5/OS as the persistency layer for applications that run in IBM WebSphere Application Server. The first section provides a detailed discussion of how IBM DB2 for i5/OS employs various lock types to implement the ANSI standard isolation levels and how the isolation levels impact the concurrency of WebSphere applications. The second section explains the WebSphere techniques that ensure data integrity. It clarifies the concepts of access-intent policies, indirect Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) -resource reference lookups, and the webSphereDefaultIsolationLevel custom property. A number of techniques that are aimed at improving concurrency and, thus, application throughput are shown, with examples and code samples.
