Overview:
With the development of the Web, new data models have started to play a more prominent role. In particular, XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has emerged as the standard data model for storing and interchanging data on the Web. As more companies adopt XML as the primary data model for storing information, the problem of designing XML databases is becoming more relevant. The concepts of database design and normal forms are central in relational database technology. This paper shows how these concepts can be extended to XML databases. The goal of this paper is to present principles for good XML data design. The paper believes this research is especially relevant nowadays, since a huge amount of data is being put on the Web.
