Overview:

As teleservices are developing to be IP-based, more and more services such as NGN, broadband access and VPN services are carried over an IP network. The Ethernet is a high-speed, cost-effective technology that plays an increasingly important role in MANs. Ethernet switches are mainly connected to form a star or ring network. A star network has no protection path and provides poor reliability, thus unable to meet the requirements of carrier-class services such as NGN service. Ring network is a popular technology for telecom networks and can solve the problem of protection switching. Ethernet ring that finds many applications now focuses on the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) technology.
