Overview:

Japan's SINET is one of the world's most high-powered research networks, supporting cutting-edge science at universities and research institutes across the country. The NII is Japan's primary academic research body, chartered with advancing research and development in information-related fields, including networking, software and content. The challenge for NII after several years of managing SINET was to create a single next-generation network platform out of its two existing networks, SINET and SuperSINET. Called SINET3, this new platform would comprise a vastly-expanded network, consolidating the NII's existing SINET and SuperSINET infrastructures into the country's largest and most advanced research and education network. NII decided on Juniper Networks' T-series routers and JUNOS operating as the core for SINET3.
