Overview:
Due to many factors, tape drives continue to play a vital part in most companies' disaster recovery plans. Simply put, there is no more economical way to copy large amounts of data to an easily-transportable medium, allowing for offsite storage of the company's information assets. While transporting tape cartridges to a location outside of the data center might protect the information from a site-wide disaster, it also puts those tape cartridges outside of one's direct control, exposing the data to potential unauthorized access or even theft. The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer information and advocacy group, maintains a list of data breaches on their web site.
