Overview:
Filesystem read performance is a critical issue for many applications. On the other hand, storage systems are typically configured with little or no knowledge of the properties of the applications that will use them. This paper presents empirical performance measurements of data throughput from disk store to application. A number of different disk system configurations are considered, and the properties of the applications are used to guide the design process. Particular attention is paid to the issues that arise when a large number of small files are present in the data set.
