Overview:

The Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) was running an obsolete Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) network that was continuously on the brink of crashing. Designed to serve just 200 users and connect only 46 computers, the system could no longer handle the demand generated by its 7,000 users, including researchers, doctors and employees. The University needed an infrastructure overhaul to solve its bottleneck problem, and the solution soon became apparent: Gigabit Ethernet. UNIFESP focused on quality and price for performance, and chose an Extreme Networks solution, to be integrated by Olitel Telecom. Extreme Networks' BlackDiamond 8810 switch integrated seamlessly with UNIFESP's Linux-based infrastructure and 12 switches were deployed in all.
