Overview:
This paper describes a hierarchical load balancing system intended for use within large cluster computing systems. The load balancing algorithm is able to deal with situations where the tasks have different requirements with respect to CPU time and other resources, and the available computers are correspondingly able to offer different sets of resources. A multiple load balancing is described which improves the balance in cases where not all tasks can be executed on all workers. A prototype of the system has been implemented and tested on a simulated distributed system with 6400 nodes in a 4-layer hierarchy.
