Overview:

Ethernet technology is moving from the office to the factory floor and penetrating industrial applications. Current market studies predict growths of about 40% for Ethernet devices in the arena of industrial networking. 10BaseT and 100BaseTX implementations can already be found in a huge number of products ranging from interfaces for PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) up to complex factory automation and networking infrastructure applications. The advantages of Ethernet due to its ease of implementation, cost of ownership and its standardisation, make it a perfect solution for industrial applications. However, in the industrial sector, special considerations such as high reliability, real-time transmission and environmental specifications, are required.
