Overview:

Botnets have been around for more than a decade. Long-time users of the Internet chat system, Internet Relay Chat--also known as "IRC," know them well. They were originally used to launch attacks and "take-overs" on IRC servers by malicious individuals, often dubbed "script kiddies", who were out for revenge.

But these botnets were small fry in comparison to the botnets of today. Since the birth of the MyDoom virus in 2004, botnets have become the de-facto method of sending spam for large scale spammers. However, even MyDoom was small scale in comparison to today. The current large scale botnets, such as Kraken and Srizbi, run into the hundreds of thousands of machines, some into the millions, and are capable of sending many billions of email messages every single day.

Check out this TechRepublic Webcast, now available on demand, to learn how these botnets came about, how they are controlled and run, what their true capabilities are and how they impact business.
