Overview:

In days of yore, the mainframe focused on enterprise-wide business transactions and long running batch processing. Because these critical business applications required rapid access to data, the mainframe became the natural home for corporate information. In parallel, distributed systems were employed to provide flexibility at the organization level. The personal computer extended computing power to the individual and became the terminal of choice for all systems. This separation of concerns served the industry for many years. However, there were unintended side affects. Since these systems often need to exchange information, a plethora of APIs evolved to support this interaction. Often, data was propagated leading to costly file transfers and concerns about consistency.
