Overview:

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a standardization body for 3G mobile radio systems, also known as the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). Established in December 1998, the 3GPP is a collaborative agreement, bringing together several telecommunication standards bodies. The UMTS, as defined by the 3GPP, is based on evolved GSM core networks and the terrestrial radio access technology, supported by these networks. It allows CN-independent procedures among different RNSs and helps keep the radio access technology-specific functions outside the CN. An RNS is further divided into the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and multiple Node Bs, also known as Base Stations (BSs). The Node Bs/BSs are connected to the RNC by the Iub interface. One Node B can serve one or multiple cells.
