Overview:

Conditions prevailing in today's mobile software marketplace hinder the success of mobile multiplayer gaming in general, and real-time multiplayer games in particular. Developers confront poor network performance and radically different design expectations for mobile gaming. Certain tried-and-true network programming techniques like dead reckoning can help developers meet these challenges. Careful game design can mitigate the remaining difficulties, though these impose constraints on what kinds of designs are possible. Successful multiplayer games are those that pay careful attention to the unique characteristics that distinguish the mobile software platform.
