Overview:

The Cornell Theory Center has been at the forefront of high-performance computing for a number of years. Like many advanced computing organizations, CTC had based much of its work on expensive proprietary UNIX implementations. Amid declining budgets, increasing reliance of researchers on a high-performance computing infrastructure and increasing commoditization of computer and networking components, CTC embarked on a unique strategy in 1999: embracing Microsoft Windows based high-performance computing. The Cornell Theory Center deployed two Unisys ES7000 servers - running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition - and leveraging Intel Itanium 2 processing technology in order to meet aggressive application requirements and high-performance computing.
