Overview:

Disaster tolerant systems must support an availability continuum that addresses everything from single-points of failure in a single system to multiple points of failure involving many systems at several locations. Disaster tolerance addresses end-to-end application availability which includes both system and data availability. That is, disaster tolerance moves from managing systems in a cluster to managing multiple clusters and standalone systems at several locations. Although discussion and examples in this paper focus on telecom billing, the principles apply to most business and mission critical environments. The purpose is to set forth a vision by using a concrete example as a reference point.
