Overview:
The concept of consolidating many disparate systems onto a single physical piece of hardware while maintaining them as separate system images has long existed with the IBM System z mainframes and now exists in the IBM System p and System i starting with the introduction of the POWER4 processor-based servers. IBM's POWER processor-based servers now offer the ability to consolidate hardware while maintaining the same separation that physical systems provide (often referred to as an "Air gap"). Both the System z systems and POWER processor-based systems rely on the concept of a "Hypervisor" to ensure the separation of partitions creating this "Virtual air gap".
