Selon votre point de vue, la virtualisation a pour objectif de prendre en charge la divergence ou la convergence. Elle prend en charge la division d'objets logiques qui doivent être séparés et/ou le regroupement des objets qui doivent être réunis. Les progrès d'ordre majeur récemment observés dans la technologie coïncident avec la tendance à la consolidation des systèmes sur des unités matérielles moins nombreuses mais plus puissantes. Le regroupement offre une solution plus économique sur du matériel plus résistant. Et compte tenu du regroupement effectué pour réduire les ressources de gestion et faire un usage plus efficace du matériel, la virtualisation paraît la solution la plus logique.
