Overview:

Spiceworks' co-founder and CEO, Scott Abel, has been involved in six company launches. He shares his advice and experiences with TechRepublic contributor Justin James in this collaborative series that examines the strategies that lead to startup success. Part one looks at how to get started and offers a method of determining which of your ideas are most likely to fly.

Abel maps out four steps to get the process underway:

  • Pick a market
  • Identify a need that isn't met
  • Create a solution that actually solves a problem
  • Make sure it's a big problem

Then, he introduces what he calls the "idea percolator," a system of analyzing a potential product or service by examining its viability in the context of those four factors.
