Overview:

The most important and most perplexing topic in software engineering is, arguably, software quality. Unfortunately, most discussions of software quality are management-focused and high-level -- and therefore all but useless to software engineers. Learn how to judge the quality of software at the level of the code that implements it with Code Quality: The Open Source Perspective. In this sample chapter, attack the subject of software quality by focusing on how to optimize the code attributes that can improve the time performance of a program's operation. Begin with a thorough understanding of the important attributes that may be improved, such as latency, throughput, processor time requirements, real-time response, time variability, and for server-class systems, load sensitivity, capacity, and scalability. Investigate how other code attributes may suffer as a result of any performance-related optimizations. Then, closely analyze multiple code samples to discover ways to improve code quality with regard to time-related properties.
