Overview:
Without the proper tools, it's easy to get confused about the status of your system. Fortunately, you don't need to install third-party utilities in order to track your system status. Windows provides a lot more in the way of system status information than you might think, and since these utilities are part of your operating system, they are always available. In this sample chapter from Windows Administration at the Command Line for Windows 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000: In the Field Results, investigate two types of Windows utilities: 1) static utilities, such as DriverQuery, that take a snapshot of your system that you can use later for comparison purposes; and 2) dynamic utilities, such as PerfMon, that provide constant output so you can monitor your system in real time, diagnose system problems, and troubleshoot or locate problems that only appear after long-term monitoring. These utilities not only help you gain a better understanding of your system, they also make it harder for intruders to plant secret software on your system and help you locate potential hard problems before they shut you down.
