Overview:

Microsoft Active Directory (AD) provides a global identity and access management infrastructure. In addition, AD provides general directory functionality and extensibility that application developers can and should use when directory functionality is required in an application under development. Using AD functionality centralizes and simplifies directory administration. To use AD functionality to support business processes or new tools, application developers extend AD schema. The schema is an AD component that defines all the objects and attributes that the directory service uses to store data. This paper shares the Microsoft IT department's approach to managing the AD schema change process though a structured workflow.
