Overview:

Effective knowledge transfer requires the guidance of IT managers who understand how to build and support peer mentor relationships. By identifying the best mentors, clarifying roles and expectations, and providing tools and communication strategies, managers can facilitate learning and information sharing on their teams.

Steve Trautman, author of Teach What You Know, has distilled a number of key aspects of the peer mentoring process to help IT managers cultivate and oversee knowledge transfer. He outlines measures such as being explicit about what a mentor needs to teach, making sure mentor/apprentice pairs understand the big picture so they can solve problems and set priorities, and distinguishing the roles of mentor and manager to prevent duplicated or overlooked tasks.
