Overview:

In photography, digital asset management (DAM) refers to the entire process that takes place after the taking of the digital picture, through final output, on to permanent storage. If you take digital photos, you practice some form of DAM. The question is, are you using your time and resources wisely? Ensuring the integrity and survival of your image files—along with an efficient workflow—should be the first order of business for the digital photographer. If you use poor asset management techniques, you may discover someday that your images are a disorganized mess—or worse yet, irretrievably lost. But by adopting universal best practices, you can maximize the value of the work you do with your image files. Take an overview of the complete DAM system in this sample chapter from The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers. Master the rules of sound digital asset management and learn what it takes to construct and maintain a long-term photographic archive. Establishing an entirely new workflow and bringing older material in line may mean a lot of work up front, but the long-term payoff in terms of productivity and satisfaction could be incalculable.
