Overview:

As personal computers become ever more powerful, complex, and connected, they also become more vulnerable to malicious attack. This sample chapter from Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out Deluxe, Second Edition examines in detail three essential steps that Windows users can take to secure their computers: using a firewall, getting updates, and using antivirus software. The chapter covers Windows XP Service Pack 2 updates and concludes with a discussion of more advanced steps users can take to protect their computer systems. With the exception of Windows Firewall using Group Policy, which is available only in the Professional edition, the chapter's discussion of security features applies equally to Windows XP Professional and Windows Home Edition.
