Overview:
An emerging trend in the industry is the deployment of a "Grid" of industry standard commodity servers running the Linux operating system for applications that have traditionally been deployed on large SMP systems or proprietary MPP systems. To be successful a grid-based solution must be able to achieve the same level of performance and reliability as the system it is replacing and be able to do this at a much lower total cost of ownership. By following simple guidelines for configuring a data warehouse, one can avoid unreasonable expectations and misunderstandings about what Linux and commodity servers can do and cannot do. This paper helps guide system engineers to create reliable and high performance Linux RAC systems for data warehouse applications.
