Hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes aren't the only disasters that damage computer equipment. An abrupt loss of electricity prevents systems from closing open applications, completing replication actions, finishing disk activities, and shutting down properly. A computer's sensitive electronics can also easily be destroyed by electrical surges spawned by lightning strikes or power grid fluctuations.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes) can help prevent damage from power loss and common electrical fluctuations, but only if you know how to properly install them to provide effective protection. IT consultant Erik Eckel has put together this list of key factors to keep in mind when you select and implement a UPS to guard against electrical catastrophes.
