Overview:

Identity theft is on the increase, to the tune of 10 million victims in the U.S. and $50 billion in costs. Share this list of preventive measures with your end users, friends, and family members to help protect them from this escalating crime.

The FTC reports that 37 percent of the consumer fraud complaints it received last year were cases of identify theft--and the numbers keep climbing. Luckily, you can reduce the risk of becoming an ID theft victim (or minimize the damage if you do become a target) by following a few sensible practices. IT security expert Deb Shinder put together this list of recommendations to help users avoid falling prey to identity thieves. Her suggestions include things like:

  • Using an alternate identity for casual Web surfing
  • Learning to recognize phishing scams
  • Regularly checking your credit reports
  • Guarding PINs and passwords
  • Restricting online shopping to reputable Web sites, with transactions secured by SSL encryption
