Overview:

When you put technology assets into an unfriendly environment, the lifecycle of your equipment may be cut in half. Fortunately, you can take steps to help preserve it, along with simplifying maintenance, operations, and support.

Deploying equipment in less-than-optimum conditions requires specialized measures to protect it from exposure to high temperatures, moisture, air particulate, and other irritants to electronics. IT pro Rick Vanover has considerable experience with such deployments, and he's put together a list of recommendations based on some of the lessons he's learned.

His suggestions include issues such as selecting an effective enclosure and air conditioning system; ensuring accessibility, security, and visibility; managing AC drainage; power provisioning; dealing with extreme cold; and designing an implementation that makes life easier for nontechnical operations and support staff.
