Overview:

There has been a widespread adoption of software system and application development based on using software components, called Component Based Development (CBD). However, the definitions of component in this context are wide and various which can cause confusion amongst the business and developer communities alike. This paper develops a component definition that is concise and robust in all circumstances for one's purpose by investigating dictionary definitions and comparing the use of components in other industries with that in the software development industry. In addition, the paper will discuss the potential advantages and common pitfalls of using such technology for software development.
