Overview:

Over the past 20 years the IT infrastructures of most organizations have moved away from a reliance on centralized computing power toward distributed systems. While the benefits of a distributed approach are numerous and well understood, the associated management challenges are yet to be mastered. A significant part of the challenge is the sprawl that can occur over time as applications and servers proliferate. This paper looks at the challenge of IT asset optimization, specifically server consolidation, and how an approach that relies on quantitative and statistical analysis can greatly assist in meeting the challenge.
