Overview:

One of the biggest changes in Windows 2000 was the move to DNS as the primary name resolution system for the network. The idea was to phase out NetBIOS and WINS, which are much more "chatty" protocols (they produce more network traffic). Some even claimed you could do without WINS all together. However, in practice, not having a WINS server on your Windows network can cause a variety of problems, especially if you're running Exchange—even Exchange 2000 or 2003. See why Exchange needs WINS and how you can get a WINS server up and running and configure Exchange to use it.
