SQL Server Express is available free from Microsoft. This document examines the requirements and the limitations of this free database application.
Taking a page from the shareware and open source universe, Microsoft is offering a free version of Server 2005 to the public. SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and the Community Technical Preview release of SQL Server Management Studio Express combine to create a fully functional database system you can download, install, and try for free.
