Overview:

A company's strategic stance dictates its project time horizons--which, in turn, have a major impact on how the IT organization functions. In growth stance, businesses will have extended horizons, with long-term projects sometimes stretching over five years. By contrast, the stability stance demands a far more constricted horizon. Stability-oriented companies, often trying to hold steady pending a change in direction or resolution of some market force, steer clear of extended deployments and projects involving large capital expenses. For them, a long-term project typically means a year or less.

This article explores the issues surrounding practical and strategic perceptions of time horizons and discusses the dynamics of the stability stance. The accompanying worksheet breaks down the types of projects this stance supports and identifies those that may complement each other.
