Overview:
Web sites commonly protect sensitive data behind a login screen, which requires users to enter valid credentials before permitting them access. This document outlines the process of protecting access to areas of a Web site using Apache Server's built-in HTTP authentication system.
For many Web sites and Web applications, granting access and establishing authenticity is a fundamental part of the user experience. However, the back-end development of these systems can involve extensive coding and a substantial investment of time, especially if the system is written using a scripting language like Perl or PHP. This download shows you, in step-by-step fashion, how to create an authentication and access mechanism using the Apache Server's built-in HTTP authentication system. Are parts of your organization's Web site protected by an HTTP authentication system? Do you use Apache Server? What other Web server would you like TechRepublic to cover regarding an HTTP authentication system?
