Overview:

The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 - HIPAA otherwise known as the Kennedy-Kessenbaum act is a law that's primary intention is to safeguard a patient's Protected Health Information, also known as PHI. PHI is individually identifiable health information for a specific patient. This law is also designed to set standards for the sharing of PHI within the medical community (doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and insurance companies). HIPAA has both privacy rules for PHI and Security rules for Electronic Protected Health Information or the EPHI. EPHI is the PHI that is maintained in electronic media, transmitted by electronic media, or transmitted and maintained in any other form.
