Software development organizations use branching strategies for many reasons, including post-release maintenance, and component-based or custom development. When establishing a branching and merging strategy there are many things to consider. A primary consideration includes the SCM tool that one chooses to do the branching - for instance, not all tools support branching, and different tools support branching in different ways.
