Overview:

Network management systems separately approach "fault" management, whether something is up or down, from "performance" management, which is a measure of how well something is working. The concern of an operations group is whether a managed element is up or down. However, as the need matures from a reactive component to a proactive one, the next requirement is "how is the system performing". This white paper describes the basic features of these two classes of measurements, and how today's enterprise requirements are forcing them to converge. The paper also describes how Network General Sniffer Enterprise NetVigil incorporates real-time performance management and scalability, while abstracting fault and performance management, to a new level of Business Service Management.
