Overview:

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology has been in the spotlight in recent times, with the US Department of Defense and Wal-Mart requiring their top suppliers to have RFID technology implemented in their supply chains by 1 January 2005. This paper provides a background of RFID technology and Electronic Product Code (EPC), the new generation of RFID-based product identification system, and describes the EPC architecture and components in greater details. It also touches on how EPC can work with the various numbering and product identification systems. The paper concludes with a description of EPC specifications for different radio frequency ranges and a brief illustration of radio spectrum allocated for RFID by the various regulatory authorities in the world.
