Orbitz was formed by leading U.S. airlines to access the rapidly growing online travel industry, to address consumers' need for an unbiased, comprehensive display of fares and rates in a single location, and to establish a lower-cost distribution channel for suppliers. As a low-cost provider in an industry that has stiff competition online and notoriously low margins, Orbitz' success is critically dependent on their rapid deployment of unique, innovative, new services at the lowest possible cost and the ability to scale services quickly. That's part of the reason the Orbitz technology team chose the Java platform and Jini technology as the basis for their online travel system architecture.
