This paper takes as its point of departure a theme frequently addressed in the recent debate around educational management, and reflected in a well attended stream at the 20th EGOS conference, titled 'Drawing on Organization Studies to Design, Manage and Organize Education'. An important first step in joining this debate is, in the authors' view, to reflect on the premise that 'management of student learning can be organized on the basis of the received wisdom of theories and concepts in organization studies rather than educational research'.
