Overview:

The suitability of wireless technologies in healthcare/hospital environments is investigated in this paper. The focus is on Wireless Personal Area Network technologies, namely, Bluetooth and the low-rate specifications described in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The paper evaluates the relevance of each technology for supporting medical applications and examines related scalability issues. Moreover, it considers heterogeneous wireless technology environments and quantifies the interaction between Bluetooth devices and IEEE 802.15.4 devices when they operate in the same environment.
