Overview:

The Ministry of Defence as with many government bodies in the United Kingdom is updating many areas of its business to take advantage of new technologies and the Internet. The Ministry of Defence required that in the solution process all authentication information should be within the DMZ. When using Novell Directory Services this would require additional ports to be opened in the secure zone Firewall to allow NDS processes to operate, which was seen as an additional security risk. With additional assistance from Novell Consulting to build DIRXML connections between NDS trees and Critical Path's (ISOCOR) directory the DECS solution was formed. The iChain Authentication server located in the DMZ uses LDAP to authenticate users and retrieve access control polices from the "Authentication" and "Access Control" directories.
